About Jean Bizimana | Documentary Photographer & Photojournalist in Rwanda

I am a professional photographer and photojournalist based in Kigali, Rwanda, with a deep commitment to storytelling through images. My journey began in childhood while living in an orphanage, where I discovered photography through Camera Kids’ Through the Eyes of Children: The Rwanda Project. That opportunity not only supported my education but also revealed the power of photography to change lives. Today, I serve as a project coordinator and photography instructor with Camera Kids, teaching photography to vulnerable children internationally—in Haiti, Nepal, and the United States—as well as to historically marginalized communities in Rwanda.

Since 2017, I have worked as a freelance photojournalist with Reuters News Agency, covering breaking news, political events, and feature stories across Rwanda, bringing stories that matter to a global audience.

My personal work focuses on the aftermath of war, civil conflict, and the generational trauma of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, exploring themes of orphanhood, motherhood, and resilience among survivors.

Beyond news coverage, I contribute to Taking Pictures Changing Lives, Fair Picture, and others. Have collaborated with organizations such as Kids Operating Room, Save the Children International, the Gates Foundation, the LemonAid & ChariTea Foundation, and others. My assignments have taken me across Rwanda, East Africa, and beyond, amplifying overlooked voices and highlighting social issues through documentary and humanitarian photography.

Through my lens, I strive to foster empathy, understanding, and connection across cultures.

Please get in touch to explore collaboration opportunities.
